BEAR Update
October 27, 2011
Hunters: If you live in grizzly country, do not hang carcasses behind the house or in the garage for extended periods. Big game carcasses stored outside should be hung from a pulley attached
to a stout 15-foot-long "meat pole" that is at least 25 feet off the ground. The lowest portion of the elk or deer should be swinging from the center of the pole and at least 10 feet off the ground.
Grizzly and black bears have been known to climb trees and stand on objects in order to reach attractants (MTFWP Hunting in Grizzly Country Brochure-to read more click here).
Lower Rattlesnake: FWP is monitoring an injured black bear in the lower Rattlesnake. If you see this bear please DO NOT approach it.
Frenchtown: A female black bear and two cubs was reported entering a garage. Please close all garage doors. Bears that feel comfortable entering garages may soon feel comfortable entering homes. This is dangerous!

BEAR Update
October 12, 2011
There are multiple sets of orphaned black bear cubs around Missoula. The best thing for these cubs is to be left alone. We understand that it is difficult to see the cubs fending for themselves; however, do not hand-feed these cubs!! Hand-feeding at this age can be a death sentence for bears. FWP is monitoring all the cubs and is hopeful that all the orphaned cubs will den this winter. If you see these cubs you can fill out a sighting form on our website or call FWP at 542-5500.
East Missoula/Rattlesnake: There are two orphaned black bear cubs between the Rattlesnake and East Missoula. The mother was hit by a car on I-90. FWP is monitoring the situation. If they are able to trap these cubs they will relocate them to a safer area in hopes that they will den for the winter.
Pattee Canyon: There is a pair of orphaned black bear cubs in the Pattee Canyon area. The mother's whereabouts are unknown.
Grant Creek: There is an orphaned black bear cub in the Grant Creek drainage. The mother was most likely hit by a car early this fall.
Big Flat: A black bear was reported getting into a chicken coop. FWP is aware of this case.
Ovando: Grizzlies have been reported in the Ovando dump. Multiple partners are looking into resolving this conflict.
West Fork of the Bitterroot: There is a lot of uncontained garbage in this area resulting in multiple black bear conflicts. If you live in this area please contain your attractants. If you have any questions about how to secure your attractants from bears please contact us.
